The design group Swedish Creatures work passionately with patterns and illustrations. Their first group collection is called “Creatures” and draws a genuine, nostalgic and romantic picture of the Swedish countryside and the modern Sweden.
“Sweden has many things that other countries lack, for example “allemansrätt” (meaning “every man’s right” or the right to move freely in the woods and nature, even private property), openness, tolerance, oceans of forests, a closeness to nature, handicraft in school and other things that are just good for people, and we wanted to give you a glimpse of all this and at the same time promote Swedish design internationally” says Lisa Edoff, one of the members of the group.
The basis for the first colleciton was a fixed set of colors, a black outline drawing style and to illustrate a creature or being in a wider meaning. Every member of the group contributed with one illustration, which together became a greater pattern. This pattern is one of the groups main features during the launch in New York.
Swedish Creatures went public during the autumn of 2016 and immediately gained recognition both internationally and in Sweden. Collaborations have already started with some high quality Swedish manufacturers including – Teko-Tryck (sponge cloths), Norrmalms cardboard factory and Åry Trays.
According to Sabina Wroblewski Gustrin who took the first initiative to create the design group, ”We are stronger together, and that makes it easier to go international from the start. When we work together we broaden our networks, think smarter, share work loads and investments.”
Swedish Creatures includes six professional creatives – “creativepreneurs” – all women born through four decades. They will go to the USA in May 2017 to show the world new Swedish design at the world leading trade show for art licensing – Surtex – where pattern designers, illustrators, agents and art buyers from all over the planet meet to find fruitful collaborations. At Surtex the group will sell their illustrations and patterns to companies and brands who will use these to decor their own products – from kid’s garments to textile, from wallpaper to porcelain.
